Summer Playlist

Because summer demands a playlist!  You need those songs when you’re headin’ to the beach, jams while you get ready for a summer date, and explosive beats for those late nights.  And of course, I’ve got you covered:

1.  Shadows BY Breathe Carolina is the electronic, sexy, bass induced song you can play on repeat and feel like a badass.

2.  Walks Like Rihanna BY The Wanted is 2014’s What Makes You Beautiful: cute, sappy, and fun to sing along to.

3.  Radioactive BY Imagine Dragons ushers in a thick bassline, a catchy chorus, and a sound that’s perfect after the sun sets.

4.  Walk of Shame BY P!nk is a funny, raunchy pop jam that every girl can holler and scream while in the car.

5.  Whip It BY Nicki Minaj is a fun, crazy song that is probably the epitome of a good time during summer.

6.  Summer BY Calvin Harris has got the dub step you need, the title that’s necessary, and the beat that’s bumpin’.

7.  #SELFIE BY The Chainsmokers is a commentary on society: hastags, bitches, whores, parties, selflies, and electronic music; it’s so bad it’s good.

8.  Ragga Bomb BY Skrillex is hardcore EDM with them bass drops, a fast paced tempo, and that classic Skrillex edge.

9.  Dark Horse BY Katy Perry is imaginative, fresh, and a little bit of a club jam.  Perry’s pushing the limits.

10.  Timber BY Pitbull featuring Ke$ha is dynamite, a perfect song to swing your hips to, and meant for the car ride to the beach.

More Music

I wish I could go to a concert every day.  I wish music just played from my shoes so silence no longer existed.  I wish I reviewed albums for a living.  Music is my life, even though I am not a musician.  And because so many great albums are being released or have been (La Dispute, Breathe Carolina, Taking Back Sunday, The Pretty Reckless, Onward Etc), music’s been on my mind.  So do enjoy some quotes about music because I just can’t get enough of it:

1.  “One good thing about music, when it hits you, you feel no pain.” – Bob Marley

2.  “Music expresses that which cannot be put into words and that which cannot remain silent.”  – Victor Hugo

3.  “Music became my religion, the record store my church, the rock stars my saints, and their songs my hymns.” – Dave Grohl

4.  “Life is for the living. Death is for the dead. Let life be like music. And death a note unsaid.” – Langston Hughes

5.  “That’s one of the great things about music.  You can sing a song to 85,000 people and they’ll sing it back for 85,000 different reasons.” – Dave Grohl

6. “Music can change the world because it can change people.” – Bono

7.  “Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything.” – Plato

8.  “Music is to the soul what words are to the mind.” – Modest Mouse

9.  “You’re like a song that I heard when I was a little kid but forgot I knew until I heard it again.” – Maggie Stiefvater

10.  “Music is the strongest form of magic.” – Marilyn Manson

I’ve Got You Covered

In my opinion, covers are terrible.  For instance, Punk Goes 90’s, it makes me gag.  A ska band doing a cover of Alanis Morissette’s famous song, You Oughta Know, is blasphemy.  Nothing can compete with the original, and sure, Alanis should be flattered that her song is timeless; however, if she were to listen to the cover, she’d probably regret giving them rights to her masterpiece.  There’s just some songs that are done perfectly the first time.  HOWEVER, when good bands redo pop laden commercialized crap and make it memorable, that is a testament to the band.  I’ve been obsessed with certain covers, but they’re well done.  So here’s the list:

1.  Sleeping With Sirens’ cover of Cee Lo Green’s song F*** You.  Now the original was a hit, it’s got a nice bluesy-jazz feel to it, but let’s be honest, add some screamo, thrashing guitars, and an F’ you attitude, this song has become gold.  I’ve got it on repeat.

2.  Her Bright Skies’ cover of Usher’s DJ Got Us Fallin’ In Love.  I’m a fan of the original to be honest, it’s great to dance to and good club music with a pulsing energy.  But, I love the cover much more.  The addition of drums and a faster pace, I think, was a good decision.

3.  We Came As Romans’ cover of The Wanted’s song, Glad You Came.  The catchy, upbeat club-esque with Spanish hints is eh.  It’s something everyone’s heard before, and its fame was short lived (for obvious reasons).  Somehow this screamo, hardcore band made this song magical, keeping with the beat but adding their own spin, complete with a badass breakdown.  Again, I’ve got this song on repeat.

4.  Issues’ cover of Justin Bieber’s Boyfriend song.  Let’s be honest, that song is garbage to begin with, but when a hardcore band screams the lyrics, makes fun of the kid, and has a line that goes, “Bitch I ain’t your Boyfriend, ’cause you’re underage/Call me in a couple years and we will f****** rage,” how can this band not have nailed it?  It’s hilariously fantastic, and I adore it.

5.  Speaking of terribly done songs, Miley Cyrus’s See You Again now rocks because of Breathe Carolina’s magic touch.  Breathe Carolina added a new dimension of laser sounds and a mystical atmosphere, plus some screamed lyrics never hurt anybody.  Notches, no yards, how about galaxies above the original.

6.  A Day To Remember’s cover of Since U Been Gone originally done by Kelly Clarkson.  First, kudos to Kelly for creating a breakup anthem for all girls.  But, Jeremy McKinnon’s scratchy, desperate, and sometimes raging voice is no match for Kelly’s clean vocals; A Day to Remember simply breathed more life into the song.

7.  The Ready Set’s cover of Airplanes, originally by B.o.B.  The original rap song featuring Hayley Williams is only bearable because of William’s amazing voice.  The Ready Set brought their A game, and basically owned the song and gave it a much needed pop twist.

8.  The Downtown Fiction’s cover of Nicki Minaj’s Super Bass is to die for.  The Downtown Fiction are not a band I like nor do I think highly of Nicki Minaj, but poorly done female rap plus a throw away pop band equals pure musical bliss.  I cannot explain it.

9.  Because I can’t help it, For All Those Sleeping’s cover of Taylor Swift’s pop jam, You Belong With Me.  Taylor Swift is so sweet and her original song is equally cute.  But, when a screamo band sings her lyrics and gives the song a metal theme, I can’t not enjoy it  The juxtaposition is immaculate.

10.  Memphis May Fire’s cover of Bruno Mars’ hit, Grenade.  The original is all right, quite similar to Just The Way You Are, his signature song.  But, I’ve gotta give credit where credit is due, Memphis May Fire bring the heat, they sing the lyrics wonderfully and add some needed breakdowns and a few screamo parts, really showcasing the emotions Bruno Mars failed to present.  The chick he’s singing about stole the breaks from his car and the song is still upbeat and happy; Memphis May Fire got pissed.
